Sri Lanka
From coastal villages to misty mountains, this trip reveals a side of Sri Lanka most travellers never get to see. Picture jungle hideaways, forest monasteries, secret surf beaches and everyday moments of connection.
You’ll volunteer with a respected marine conservation NGO, wander ancient ruins and cave temples, share home-cooked meals with local families, and spot elephants where they actually belong. Our route avoids the busiest circuits, so instead of following tour buses, you’ll meet villagers, conservationists, monks, and fishermen who bring the country’s layered history and modern challenges to life.
This is Sri Lanka with more texture: real conversations, hands-on experiences, and time to absorb it all.
Day 1: Negombo
Welcome to Sri Lanka! Arrive at your own pace and settle into the laid-back coastal town of Negombo, just a short drive from the airport. With no activities scheduled until our 7pm welcome dinner, you’re free to stroll along the beach, watch the fishing boats return with the day’s catch, or explore the countryside by bicycle.
Day 2: Kandy
This morning you can choose to volunteer with The Pearl Protectors, a respected marine conservation organisation (optional), or explore Colombo’s lively streets and markets.
In the afternoon, we’ll make our way into the hill country and onward to Kandy.
Optional activity: Volunteering with The Pearl Protectors (+£100 donation)
Note: Volunteer placements vary depending on the organisation’s needs and your background. Projects may include research, strategy work, turtle conservation, clean-ups or community outreach. The exact day of volunteering may shift depending on where the project will be based.
Day 3: Kandy
Start your morning with breakfast overlooking the green ridgelines surrounding Kandy. Spend the day exploring the city at your own pace before heading to a quirky, antique-filled hilltop home for sunset – a time capsule packed with stories, heirlooms, and an unexpectedly colourful family history.
Included: Visit to a historical home and sunset drink (beer or soft drink)
Day 4: Habarana
Head north this morning toward Habarana and settle into the jungle surroundings. This area is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see elephants in the wild – you might spot them on an afternoon safari, on the roadside, or if you’re lucky, wandering nearby at dusk.
Take the afternoon to relax.
Optional paid activity: Afternoon safari (Hurulu Eco Park or Minneriya)
Day 5: Habarana
Rise early for the hike up Pidurangala, famous for its sunrise views over Sigiriya Rock and sweeping jungle landscapes.
In the afternoon, join a local family for a hands-on Sri Lankan cooking class – learn to prepare traditional dishes using local spices and fresh produce.
Included: Pidurangala sunrise hike, cooking class
Day 6: Habarana
Explore an ancient Buddhist monastery hidden in the jungle – a true off-the-beaten-path site where you may find yourselves completely alone among centuries-old ruins.
If you’re hungry for more culture, continue in the afternoon to the cave temples of Dambulla or the iconic rock fortress of Sigiriya.
Included: Jungle monastery visit
Optional paid activity: Dambulla or Sigiriya visit
Day 7: Ella
Travel into the highlands this morning. After reaching Nanuoya by road, jump aboard one of the world’s most scenic train rides for the final stretch to Ella. Rolling tea fields, waterfalls, and sweeping mountain views make this an unforgettable journey.
Enjoy sunset over the hills and a relaxed evening in town.
Included: Ella mountain train ride
Day 8: Ella
Spend the morning climbing and swimming through a series of natural rock pools and cascades tucked into Ella’s lush valleys.
In the afternoon, visit the famous Nine Arch Bridge, part of the engineering marvel known as the Demodara Loop. If time allows, join a sunset meditation session led by a nearby Buddhist monk – or relax in town.
Included: Waterfall exploration, Nine Arch Bridge, optional sunset meditation
Day 9: Tangalle
Arrive in Tangalle by midday. Enjoy free time to rest or wander down to the harbour to see the brightly painted fishing boats.
In the evening, share a home-cooked seafood feast with a local fisherman and his family – a warm, authentic window into coastal life.
Included: Dinner with a fisherman’s family
Day 10: Hiriketiya
Arrive in the morning to the laid-back surf bay of Hiriketiya. Depending on the wave conditions, our group surf lesson will take place either this afternoon or tomorrow morning.
If not surfing today, enjoy free time to explore cafés, swim in the sheltered bay, or look for turtles gliding near the shore.
Included: Surf lesson (timing depends on conditions)
Day 11: Colombo
If we didn’t surf yesterday, we’ll do it this morning before travelling to Colombo. You’re welcome to leave the trip here instead of continuing to the capital.
If you’re travelling onwards, we’re happy to suggest other places to explore in Sri Lanka.
Day 12: Departure Day
Transfer to the airport for your flight home.
Note: This itinerary may shift due to weather, road conditions, or local factors.

Why choose us over the big operators?
Groups that make sense – We’re for 18–35s who want to get to know the places they’re visiting, not tick off a cookie-cutter itinerary. Everyone’s at a similar stage in life, keeping the energy active, curious, and ready to engage. Plus, we keep our groups small (no more than 8 people), which means you get to know each other and travel as new friends.
Experiences you can’t find elsewhere – From hidden corners to unique local encounters, our trips include activities and access built from years of local knowledge and trusted contacts. Some experiences aren’t even bookable on Google.
Leadership opportunities – Come back as a team leader and travel for free while gaining hands-on experience running a trip.
Give back for real – We work directly with communities. Volunteer and learn from local organisations to understand challenges in the places we’re visiting.
A community beyond the trip – Meet like-minded travellers who often become lifelong friends or adventure partners.
Mentorship – The team is around if you want guidance before, during, or after the trip.
Everything essential included – All group activities, 3 meals a day and experiences on the itinerary are covered unless specified. Add-ons exist, but only if you want them.
